Self Censoring

woman typing on laptopWhen I decided to start my own blog, I had a clear picture in my mind of what I wanted to do. But over time, this seems to have faded to the point that each time I come on here, I don’t know where to start. I worry about what to write, whether it is worth reading, if anyone will find it interesting or helpful, etc. etc. Until I just don’t write anything at all.

What makes this interesting is a conversation I had with a friend about Twitter and blogs. Both of us admitted that we write things, re-read them and then delete them before anyone else can see them. Now I know a lot of writers do this, but we’re not doing it because our writing (or even tweeting) is overly bad, but due to the fact that we just don’t think that we are adding anything to blog or twitter-verse.

It was almost like a light went off in my head. What I realized was that I don’t have “blog” writer’s block, but instead I am stopping myself. I have become the biggest censor of my own work ever. I analyze and talk myself out of writing almost anything. Instead of starting the process and growing with it, I read and read and read and then compare my work to those that I read (many who have been doing this for years!). Not really fair, I guess.

So, I’ve decided to make a pre-New Year’s Resolution. I’m going to categorically give this a try. I’m going to sit down and make time to write my blog and throughout the month of December, I will try to write a post every day. If nothing else, my writing should improve. Besides, who can work as a freelance writer and editor and not even have a blog to point to! It’s almost as bad as freelance artists not having a portfolio.

Anyway, here goes … wish me luck …

P.S. I don’t believe in New Year’s Resolutions. Why can we only make a resolution at new year? Thus the December resolution. :)

with the domain you have, it seems you should be posting articles about how to write better, read better and tips on editing.

copyblogger is a good place to start, but just simple 3-500 word articles on writing, book reviews, magazine reviews etc. good luck

Thanks for your comment. This was my intention but I have to really sit down and work on this blog.

I like this valuable strategy. I went to your web log for the first time as well as just been your fan. Keep post as I’m gonna come to read it everyday.
