To Freelance or Not to Freelance

Tomorrow, I will have officially been a freelance for one year. Some days it feels like I have been at it for much longer and on others, it seems like I’ve just started. What is odd about this is the fact that there is an office job that is making me seriously question whether to pack it all in and head back in.

I’m completely stuck at a crossroads … I love freelancing, I love doing my own thing, when I want and where I want. To be honest, I’m a terrible employee for most people. I get bored quickly and don’t do boredom well at all, so if something’s not a challenge, I get fed up relatively quickly.

Being a freelance writer / editor / proofreader / WordPress designer (at times) has definitely been challenging and I am really enjoying it. I seem to be good at it (based on the feedback I’ve received) and have now managed to cultivate some long-term clients. The problem is … although I love what I do and I’m good at it … can I make a living doing it? Right now, the answer is no.

So, here comes the hard question. Do I pack it all in and head back to working an office job? Or do I tighten the purse straps and persevere, doing whatever I need to do to make ends meet while making a go of this? Sadly, I don’t have an answer. I’m leaning towards the send in the application for the job (yes I have my cover letter and resume prepared) and see what happens. Worse case scenario, they offer me the position and I really do have to choose …
